Only eight of 24 whales, which beached themselves on Tasmania's west coast early today have survived.

Twenty sperm whales became stranded on Ocean Beach, near Strahan, with four more trapped ashore in nearby Macquarie Harbour.

The Department of Primary Industries confirmed 16 whales died on Ocean Beach throughout the day.

A department spokesman said the four remaining whales on Ocean Beach were unlikely to survive, but held out hope for those stranded in the harbour.

Marine mammal specialists are on scene, but dangerous conditions on the water have so far prevented them from intervening.

They plan to begin work early tomorrow and expect the mission to last several days.

The survival prospects for 34 pilot whales stranded on tidal flats about 2 kilometres off the tip of Farewell Spit in Golden Bay worsened tonight.
Department of Conservation Golden Bay area manager John Mason said the whales, trapped in the shallows, had moved further in towards the spit on the midday high tide.
By 4.30pm the weather conditions in the area were "horrible'', with a 40-knot northerly wind, rain, and poor visibility.
Twenty-one dead whales and one which was suffering and had to be put down were found last night. This morning another 10 dead were found, but 34 live whales were discovered, including two young ones. Their remote location and their distance from shore ruled out any rescue attempt.
DOC had hoped that they would be able to free themselves and go out to sea on the high tide, but Mr Mason said instead of that they had come closer to the shore.
"The initial assessment is that few if any have managed to refloat themselves, although one or two might have got away.''
There is another high tide at 1.07am, but the tides are reducing, and the fact that they have moved towards the shoreline lowered hopes that they might refloat.
"There's really nothing we can do for them so we just have to hope that they manage to get out by themselves.''
Mr Mason said DOC would reassess the situation in the morning before deciding if any of the whales needed to be euthanised.

They were spread over about a kilometre in a tidal area past the Farewell Spit lighthouse and near the gannet colony, he said.

Tissue and blood samples would be taken from the dead whales and a scientist was arriving overnight to also gather stomach contents.
The first stranded whales were spotted yesterday evening by commercial tour operator Chris Pomeroy.
Two DOC staff were sent to the scene, near the gannet colony past the lighthouse, and found 21 dead whales and one alive but in poor condition, which was euthanised with a rifle.
At low tide this morning, DOC returned to the scene and found the total had grown to 65, with 31 dead.
Mason said the whales, which measure up to five metres, were stranded on the tidal flats two to three kilometres offshore.
The stranding season is from November to March.
"This is quite early in the season, but it's not unusual."
It was only the location that ruled out a rescue attempt, he said.
"If this had been just off Puponga, we'd have been out there trying to refloat them at lunchtime. But when you're two to three kilometres offshore and you have to stand to refloat a whale in water that's chest deep, and you've then got to wade three kilometres back to the beach - we don't want to put people in that position."

Massive Estero Bay fish kill a mystery

No one's sure why the fish are being found dead; red tide is a suspect.

It’s a mystery: Something is killing mullet in Estero Bay, but nobody knows what.


Katie McFarland, an FGCU graduate student, first saw large numbers of dead mullet floating in the bay and washed up along the shoreline Friday.


Saturday morning, McFarland took another trip onto the bay to take water samples and saw hundreds of mullet between FGCU’s Vester Field Station and New Pass.


“From what I’ve heard, it’s the whole bay,” she said. “I’ve yet to see anything but mullet. It’s crazy, the numbers of them.”
Soon after he made that comment, McFarland found one dead Atlantic spadefish.


One suspect is red tide, a natural phenomenon that occurs when the toxic single-cell alga Karenia brevis undergoes a population explosion, or bloom.


To determine the strength of a red tide, scientists take water samples and count the number of Karenia cells per liter of water.


Fish can start dying when concentrations are “low,” 10,000 to 100,000 cells per liter; the effects of medium concentrations, 100,000 to 1 million cells, are “probable fish kills.”


According to the state’s latest red tide status report, a Karenia bloom stretches for 30 miles along the shore from southern Lee County to northern Collier County and 30 miles offshore. Water samples taken Tuesday showed medium concentrations at Lighthouse Beach on Sanibel and low counts at Lynn Hall Park and Lovers Key State Park.


“Satellite imagery shows that the bloom we had up in Sarasota County worked its way down off Captiva and kept heading south,” said Gary Kirkpatrick, manager of Mote Marine Laboratory’s Phytoplankton Ecology Program. “Clearly it’s in the area, but I can’t tell what’s killing the fish without having somebody do a toxin analysis. It seems likely that it’s red tide.”


But if it’s red tide, which can kill any fish species, as well as birds, marine mammals and sea turtles, why is it killing almost exclusively mullet?


“I don’t know why mullet, unless it got into an area of the estuary that was highly loaded with mullet,” Kirkpatrick said. “It doesn’t make real good sense.”


Another possible reason for the fish kill, McFarland said, is a bloom of a different kind of algae that is depleting the water of dissolved oxygen.


As of Saturday, no dead fish have been reported outside Estero Bay.


“I’ve been fishing every day, from Chino Island to Boca Grande, and it looks good up here,” said Capt. Shane Dooley, a Pine Island fishing guide and commercial fisherman.



“Everything’s clean. There’s nothing bad.”
Jimmy Jensen, co-owner of Jensen’s Twin Palm Cottages and Marina and Jensen’s on the Gulf on Captiva, said he hasn’t heard reports of dead fish since mid-October.

“We’ve got nothing at all,” he said. “I haven’t heard anything from the bay side or the Gulf side.”
