Philippines authorities warned that Mayon, one of the country's most active volcanoes, is showing signs of life and could erupt again soon. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said it is raising the 2,460-metre (8,070-foot) mountain's alert status to "moderate unrest" from that of "low-level unrest." Nearby residents were reminded not to venture into a "permanent danger zone" in a six-kilometre (nearly four mile) radius from the crater. The zone was also extended to seven kilometres on its southeast flank, which faces Legazpi, a city of 160,000 people. "This alert condition signifies a state of unrest which could lead to ash explosions or eventually to hazardous magmatic eruption," the institute said in its latest advisory. The increased frequency of low-level volcanic quakes had pushed toward the crater lip "a cone-shaped pile of hot, steaming old rocks, possibly remnants from previous eruptions which could be the source of the glow at the crater," it added. Seismologist Renato Solidum, the head of the government institute, said the immediate danger if volcanic activity escalates was of ash explosions that could affect aviation at Legazpi airport or crush roofs of nearby houses. "Sudden explosions and rockfalls from the upper slopes" are also a threat, the advisory said. Mayon has erupted 48 times since records began, most recently in 2006. A major eruption in 1814 buried the town of Cagsawa.

Russia's northernmost active volcano churned out ash to a height of some 5,000 meters (23,000 feet) in the country's Far East late on Saturday, the local geophysics service said on Sunday. The 3,283-meter (10,771-foot) Shiveluch volcano on the Kamchatka Peninsula last erupted in December 2006 and has been active ever since. The service reported registering over 170 tremors within the area in the past 24 hours. "Some of them were followed by powerful ash bursts and avalanches," a spokesman for the service said. Volcanic activity over the past two-three years has significantly altered the contour of the volcano, with the crater increasing in size by 50% and the slopes becoming far steeper. There are more than 150 volcanoes on Kamchatka, 29 of them active.

Koryaksky volcano, which is located some 28 kilometers away from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the administrative center of the Kamchatka territory, is ejecting columns of vapor, gas and ash to the altitude of about 4,000 meters above sea level. The trail of gas and ash extends over a distance of almost 20 kilometers. Experts from the Kamchakta Volcanic Eruption Response Team told Itar-Tass the eruption does not pose any threat to nearby population centers. The cloud of vapor and gas is seen perfectly well from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and the trail extending westwards can be seen clearly, too. According to the information provided by the Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences, seismic activity at the volcano has exceeded the background parameters but there is no strong activation yet. Registering equipment started sending signals of growing seismic tremors from the volcano in the night hours of Sunday and they might have been caused by the admix of ash to the gas and vapors, experts said. In the meantime, gas and vapor clouds containing volcanic ash may pose risks for commercial aviation flights, and that is why all the services and departments concerned have been warned that flying through the trails extending from the volcano may be dangerous. The Koryaksky volcano is 3,456 meters high. Its previous activation occurred in 1956 and 1957. Experts say the volcano witnessed powerful eruptions from 7,000 to 3,500 years ago.

Communities on the Vanuatu island of Gaua are worried about the volcano in its centre. For the past fortnight Gaua volcano has shown signs of increased seismic activity, generating sulphurous gas and ash into the atmosphere and affecting water supplies. The volcano's alert level has now been set at one, nowhere near the highest, that's level five, but still a worry for the two thousand people who call the remote island home.

Local resident said: Ash fall from the volcano and also the smelling of sulphur and other gasses that was really no good smell and also their water was also affected and also some of the cabbages which they always eat, one of the cabbages which we call island cabbage. Every time since last Sunday, before they want to cook their island cabbage they have to wash it because of the ashes. The situation especially the confirmation from one of the pilots from Air Vanuatu flying past, he said he heard an explosion. On Sunday, they had the first explosion down on the village on the west coast. They heard an explosion. Alaska’s Cleveland Volcano briefly erupted on Friday evening, according to volcanologist on Saturday, but no one was thought to be at risk . Friday’s eruption was described as being brief and started at around 11.30 p.m. local time (0730 UTC). According to the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO), satellite data indicated that the Cleveland volcano was producing an ash cloud to maximum altitudes of 15,000′ to 20,000′ (4.5 to 6.1 kilometers). In response to the eruption, the center raised the aviation color code to Orange and the volcano alert level to “Watch.” “The lack of a real-time seismic network at Cleveland means that AVO is unable to track local earthquake activity related to volcanic unrest,” a statement from the agency said. “Short-lived explosions with ash plumes that could exceed 20,000 ft above sea level can occur without warning and may go undetected on satellite imagery.” The volcano is located on the western half of Chuginadak Island, a remote and uninhabited island in the east central Aleutian Islands of Alaska. It is located about 45 miles (75 kilometers) west of the community of Nikolski, which has only a few dozen residents. Cleveland has seen an increase in activity over the past decade. Friday’s eruption marks the third one this year, with earlier eruptions in January and June. The volcano’s most recent significant eruption began in February of 2001, when it produced three explosive events that created ash clouds as high as 39,000 ft (12 kilometer) above sea level. The eruption also produced a lava flow and a hot avalanche that reached the sea.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology recorded an ash explosion in Mayon Volcano early Wednesday, which caused ash fall in Albay towns located southwest and northwest of the volcano. "The explosion, which occurred at around 1:58 a.m., is a clear sign of magma intrusion toward the summit crater of the volcano," said Alex Baloloy, Phivolcs science research analyst. The explosion, which lasted for about three minutes, was accompanied by rumbling sounds. Residents in the towns of Camalig, Guinobatan, Polangui, Oas, and Ligao City reported experiencing the ash fall. Baloloy said, however, that the height of the ash column was not recorded because clouds covered the view of the volcano and it was still dark when the explosion happened. He added that because of the prevailing northeast monsoon, the ash fall drifted toward the southwest and northwest towns of the volcano. Another ash emission was recorded at around 7:02 a.m. with ashes as high as 300 meters from the crater drifting in the same direction of the first ash explosion early morning. Mayon Volcano remains at Alert Level 2, meaning a state of increasing unrest of magmatic origin which may eventually lead to eruption. "The volcano has exhibited already two ash explosions since early morning today and it is possible that more explosions and even slight to stronger explosions could occur anytime. That is why we are closely monitoring the volcano," Baloloy said. Albay Governor Joey Salceda immediately alerted the disaster officials through the Albay Public Safety and Emergency Management Office to reiterate the strict observance of the six-kilometer permanent danger zones around the volcano; and the seven-kilometer extended danger zone in the southeast quadrant of the volcano. The 2,462-meter-tall volcano 300 kilometers southeast of Manila first spewed ash this year in three successive events last September 15. Another smaller single ash explosion was also recorded by the Phivolcs last October 28 and the latest early Wednesday morning which is already characterized by ash fall.

Evacuation will be necessary if the alert level is raised to the next higher level. Currently residents are allowed to continue activities around the volcano, but should stay away from the summit area. Batur volcano is a popular tourist location on Bali, and offers spectacular views of one of the world's most impressive calderas. The last eruption of Batur volcano was in 2000 when ash emissions reach a height of 300 m above the summit.

A volcano in the eastern Philippines spewed ash Wednesday, prompting government volcanologists to warn of an impending eruption. The ash explosion occurred before dawn at the Mayon Volcano in Albay province, 375 kilometres south-east of Manila, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology. "This event was recorded by the seismic network as an explosion-type earthquake, which lasted for about three minutes and was accompanied by rumbling sounds," the institute said in a bulletin. "Incandescent rock fragments at the upper slope were observed," it said. Several villages in the towns of Camalig, Guinobatan and Ligao at the foot of the volcano experienced ashfalls. The institute warned that Mayon's state of unrest could lead to more eruptions of ash and possibly magma. It urged residents around the foot of the volcano to stay out of a danger zone within a 6-kilometre radius of the mountain because of the threat of sudden explosions and rockfalls from the upper slope. The 2,472-metre volcano has erupted about 50 times since 1616. Its most violent eruption was in 1814 when more than 1,200 people were killed and a town was buried. An eruption in 1993 killed 79 people. Its last major eruption was in 2006, forcing more than 30,000 people to flee their homes.

A lava flow has started to come down the slope of Eurasia's highest volcano, the Klyuchevskoy, on the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia's Far East, a local volcanologist said on Sunday. The Klyuchevskoy, which lies 220 miles north of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, is one of the largest active volcanoes in the world and reaches an altitude of 15,584 feet. It erupts about every 2 years. "A small flow of lava has started trickling down the south-eastern slope of the Klyuchevskoy after magma has filled its crater to the brink," said a researcher at the Far Eastern Institute of Volcanology and Seismology. He also said the volcano continued to throw red-hot rocks to a height of 200 meters (over 650 feet). The current eruption started in August after several months of relevant inactivity. Unlike many others, it started slow, but its intensity is rapidly growing. Seismological stations near the Klyuchevskoy register hundreds of small tremors in the area every day. The volcano is dangerous only to tourists at this point, although lava flows and high-altitude ash emissions could soon threaten air traffic in the region. The Klyuchevskoy started a new active cycle with an eruption on February 15, 2007. Volcanic ash from that eruption stretched over 500 km above the Bering Sea at the height of 8.2-8.7 km. There are more than 150 volcanoes on Kamchatka, 29 of them active.

A volcanic eruption has eased enough to allow a local airport to open, but thousands of people are staying clear of Colombia's most active volcano as more activity is feared, authorities warned on Sunday. Ashes are still falling near the Galeras volcano in the south, after Friday's eruption, but a colour-coded alert has been lowered from red to orange, the Colombia Institute of Geology and Mining (Ingeominas) said. An orange alert means a new eruption was possible "in days or weeks," rather than imminently, it added. Friday's eruption caused no casualties, but some 1,000 people were evacuated from around the volcano to Pasto, the capital of Narino department. Another 8,000 people defied evacuation orders, refusing to leave their homes. Authorities are urging people living in the Galeras foothills to leave for Pasto, 920 kilometres south of Bogota, as the danger of new eruptions is still quite high, warned Ingeominas deputy director Martha Calvache. Regional authorities said traffic restrictions are being maintained on a highway linking Pasto to villages close to Galeras, but Antonio Narino airport serving Pasto has been reopened for business. A 1993 eruption of Galeras, which rises in the Andes mountain chain to an altitude of 4,270 metres, killed nine people, including six scientists who had gone down into its crater to take gas samples. Ingeominas said the volcano rumbled back into action again in 2004 and has been causing about 19 earthquakes per year. The institute said an orange alert also continued for areas near the Huila volcano, where sizeable volcanic activity also has been detected in recent weeks. Huila, at some 5,363 metres, last erupted in November 2008, killing 10 people.

More than 300 people are being evacuated from an island in the north of Vanuatu as gas and ash from volcanic eruptions are drifting on to three villages. The government has sent the paramilitary mobile forces and the Vanuatu Red Cross Society to monitor the evacuation from the west of the island of Gaua in Torba province. The volcano has been erupting since September but several recent minor eruptions have increased the volume of gas and ash which has been carried by a strong wind. The director of the National Disaster Management Office, Job Esau, says people in the area have been suffering from respiratory problems, diarrhoea and skin irritation. He says the water supply has also been affected and people want to leave “They are happy and they have been affected so much, especially on the western part of the island, they are now prepared and concerned that they want to move out, and allow the activity to continue. They want to go to a safe area.” Job Esau says people are being relocated by boat to the eastern side of Gaua over the next few days. He says they are monitoring the volcano and there are plans in place to evacuate the entire island if necessary.

Mount Mayon volcano in the Philippines, which killed scores in an eruption 16 years ago, has spewed an ash plume leading to fears it may blow again. Two explosions early on Wednesday sent ash and rocks more than half a mile into the air. Hundreds of residents living close to the active volcano, in Albay province on the island of Luzon, have evacuated the surrounding area. Chief state volcanologist Renato Solidum said the alert level remains stable but if magma continues to rise below the crater, there could be another eruption within weeks. In Daraga township on the southern slope of the mountain, Mayor Cicero Triunfante has ordered the early evacuation of more than 300 residents in the village of Matnog. He fears the village could be in the path of a lava flow if the volcano blows. Provincial disaster officer Cedric Daep said mass evacuations would be ordered once the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology raises the alert to the next level.

He said the ash explosions occurred at 7:04 a.m., 1038 a.m., 12:15 p.m., 12:21 p.m. and 1:04 p.m. PHIVOLCS also recorded 42 high frequency volcanic earthquakes and 535 tons of sulfur dioxide emission in the past 24 hours. The agency said the activity was normal for a volcano under alert level two but they are not discounting the possibility of a major eruption. Baloloy said entering the 6-kilometer permanent danger zone and the 7-kilometer extended danger zone is strictly prohibited. Residents near the danger zone said they are already prepared for possible evacuation.

Piton de la Fournaise volcano erupted Monday, December 14, 2009 at 18:45 (local time GMT +4). The eruption was preceded by a seismic crisis and a raise of the summit area deformations, which started at 17:30 (GMT +4). The eruptive tremor began at 18:30 (GMT+4). A system of sub-parallel fractures along the summit of Dolomieu crater fed lava flows on the southern slope of the Piton de la Fournaise, inside the Enclos Fouqué. A second fissures system opened on the eastern flank of the Dolomieu summit crater at 20:25 (GMT +4). Then lava flows were spent towards the eastern slope. This eruption ended during the night at 00h40 (GMT +4) after a gradual decrease in magma supply from midnight (local time). This morning, Tuesday, December 15, 2009, a visible degassing in the south and southeast fractures is associated with a low intensity eruptive tremor. All of the lava flows was confined to high zone of the volcano and more specifically the slopes south and south-east of Piton de la Fournaise.

Trickles of lava rolled down the 8,070-foot (2,460-meter) mountain towering over the Albay Gulf in the central Philippines, while five new ash explosions, one of them reaching 550 yards (500 meters) in the air, shook Mayon's steep slopes, said chief state volcanologist Renato Solidum. During the day, the summit is shrouded in white clouds of dust and ash, and dark orange lava becomes clearly visible in the nighttime. Residents of Legazpi city on the foothills of the cone-shaped mountain converge in a downtown park at night to watch the spectacle from a safe distance. "There is the possibility that it can turn into the explosive phase of the eruption," Solidum told The Associated Press. "Right now, we cannot say for sure, but the initial phases of 2000, 2001 and 2006 eruptions are almost the same." Scientists raised the alert level on Mayon to two steps below a major eruption after ash explosions late Monday. Albay provincial authorities quickly started moving thousands of families from a five-mile (eight-kilometer) danger zone around the mountain. More than 30,000 had been transported out of the critical area by Wednesday, or 65 percent of the targeted population, said Cedric Daep, head of the provincial disaster management office.
