Description:

An eruption of the most northern active volcano in Kamchatka - Shiveluch occurred this night and appeared to be one of the most powerful eruptions of the recent years. Powerful flows of ash were coming from the volcano crater along with gas flows and fragments of magma substances with the temperature reaching 800 degrees Centigrade. Ash belches went up to 10-12 kilometres high. Satellite photos distinctly show a 600-kilometre ash plume going west from the volcano. At the moment specialists register powerful explosions in the volcano crater; it is said that in the closest time another eruption may take place.

Situation

The people of Ecuador are expecting the eruption of the Tungurahua volcano. Authorities have ordered the evacuation of at least 1,000 villagers who live near the foot of the volcano. The evacuation of 300 families has taken place as a precautionary measure after the volcano started rumbling and spewing smoke. The people are from the ten hamlets located on the western slopes of the five thousand metre volcano. Pablo Morillo, the governor of Chimborazo province, where the volcano is located said: "The support teams know what to do, they are ready with transport, personnel, the shelters are ready." Representatives of the villagers have asked the government to resettle evacuated families in new locations so that they will not have to return their homes in the danger zone. Evacuee Domingo Criollo complained about the way the residents were treated by officials. He said: "The first time we were evacuated, they brought us to the national park and abandoned us there." Recent reports from Ecuador's Geophysics Institute said the volcano had been spewing ash but there has been no trace of lava. Tungurahua erupted twice in 2006, killing at least four people and forcing the evacuation of thousands of villagers.

A strong 6.2-magnitude quake struck Indonesia's Papua province on Monday, damaging about 25 houses and sparking fires but causing no casualties, the meteorological agency, officials and residents said. The earthquake was centred eight kilometres north-west of the town of Manokwari, prompting residents to flee their homes and other buildings, many clutching belongings, ElShinta radio said. Local police officer Ari said that some 20 floating houses belonging to fishermen had caught fire following the quake. "The houses were made of wood, that's why they were easily burned. The shakes may have caused stoves to fall which caused fires". Papua New Guinea’s national airline, Air Niugini, has indefinitely suspended all flights into one of the country’s busiest airports, Tokua. Flights to Tokua airport were suspended due to increased volcanic emissions in the East New Britain township. The airline’s flight information office says the airport’s runway is heavily covered in ash. A spokesperson for the airline said that the air space over Tokua airport is being monitored and any decision to resume flights will depend on the prevailing winds dispersing volcanic emission away from the aerodrome.

Plumes of steam were seen rising out of Mount St. Helens in Washington Thursday. A pilot, who also happens to be a geologist, first noticed the steam as he flew over Mount St. Helens on Sunday. The geologist found out two small earthquakes happened at the same time as he saw the steam. According to scientists the seismic activity is a typical indicator the magma and/or superheated gases are moving through channels under Mount St. Helens.

Chile's Llaima, one of South America's most active volcanoes, belched ash and a nearly mile-long river of lava crept down its slopes on Wednesday as geologists warned activity could intensify. Ecuador's Tungurahua volcano exploded into action Wednesday, spewing red-hot lava, rocks and a 10-kilometer (six-mile) high plume of ash that forced 1,450 people from their homes, officials said. "The eruption is going on right now and continues to generate pyroclastic flows" of red-hot gas, ash and rocks down the volcano's western flank, Geophysical Institute director Hugo Yepez told reporters. The 5,029-meter (16,500-foot) mountain, 135 kilometers (84 miles) south of the capital Quito, began erupting with a series of loud explosions in the pre-dawn hours, waking more than 20,000 people living in 10 towns and villages in its surroundings. The eruption so far has caused no injuries or damage, outside of tonnes of ash deposited on buildings and roads in Quero forcing its inhabitants to wear masks. But some 400 families living closest to the volcano have been evacuated as a precaution.
