Situation: Two new volcanic eruptions were confirmed on Wednesday near Spain's El Hierro island in the Canaries, where 500 people spent another night outside their homes after being evacuated as a precautionary measure. "I confirm the existence of two points of volcanic eruption at El Hierro," Laura Otero, a spokeswoman for the local authorities, told AFP, adding that there were dead fish and a strong odor of sulfur at both sites. The head of emergency services in the Canaries, Juan Manuel Santana, said in a statement that "the two points are located at two nautical miles and 1.5 miles southwest of (the village of) La Restinga". The first eruption occurred at a depth of 2,300 feet and the other at a depth of 655 feet. He said the eruptions "resulted in two stains on the sea surface where there are dead fish and a strong odour of sulfur." Some 500 residents and tourists were evacuated from the village of La Restinga as a precautionary measure on Tuesday after a 4.3-magnitude quake the previous day, the first volcanic euption in the Canaries in 40 years. Monday's eruption was detected 3 miles from the island at a depth of between 1,640 and 3,940 feet beneath the sea. Experts had said the eruption would not be felt on the island. Most of the evacuees have found refuge with relatives or friends in other villages on the island. But dozens of others, mostly tourists, spent the night in a student dormitory and a local gym. Pointing to "uncertainty over the coming days", authorities said in a statement that they were keeping Restinga on "red alert", while the rest of the island remained on yellow alert, one notch lower. "It is recommended to exercise caution," said Paulino Rivero, head of the Canaries administration. But he said people would be able to return to their homes under the protection of civil safety officials to retrieve medicines or clothes. Rivero said scientists had noticed no significant changes since Tuesday afternoon. El Hierro, which means iron in Spanish, is the smallest of Spain's Canary Islands, located in the Atlantic off the coast of Morocco. Perched atop an ancient volcano, the island of Hierro has undergone some 10,000 tremors since July 19, the vast majority of them not felt by its 11,000 residents. The last volcanic eruption on the Canary Islands was on nearby La Palma in 1971.

Situation: Residents of the village of La Restinga on the island of El Hierro were allowed on Saturday to return to their homes,as the risk of a volcanic eruption subsides. Although the stain in the sea caused by sulphur emitted by the underwater volcano off the coast of the most westerly of the Spanish controlled Canary Islands now surrounds much area of the island, indicators point to the eruption losing strength.



As a result the residents of La Restinga, the village closest to the site of the eruption began to return to their homes on Friday night. They had previously been allowed to make only a brief return to their houses in order to collect essential possessions. The permission to allow the residents to return to their village, which has an economy based on tourism and fishing, comes in the wake of explanations by Spanish scientists on Thursday. Carmen Lopez, of the Spanish National Geographic Institute and Joan Marti of the Board of Scientific Investigation said that the eruption was less powerful than first predicted. Early predictions had spoken of a four stage eruption resulting in magma expelled to the surface creating a new island. That now looks a remote possibility after Lopez said indicators such as the strength and depth of earth tremors have been falling and there has been an overall decrease in seismic activity. Marti was more cautious and said that although it could be that an eruption with various phases could still happen, there was no evidence to show that it was the case in El Hierro. He said event will eventually turn out to be an underwater eruption like many others in the region, which is situated close to a fault line in the Atlantic Ocean. Scientists will now continue to monitor the situation until readings return to the normal levels seen until July when seismic activity was first detected.

Situation: Turkey was struck by its most powerful earthquake in at least a decade Sunday, as a major tremor and at least seven aftershocks rattled the poor east of the country. Television pictures from Van Province showed rescuers and members of the public climbing over massive piles of cinderblocks that had been a building before the earthquake hit. Ambulances and bulldozers were on the scene. A seven-story building collapsed on Kazim Karabekir Street in the city of Van, and more buildings were reduced to rubble the village of Tabanli in Van Province, the Anatolian news agency said. It was unknown how many people were trapped. Video from CNN Turk showed the inside of shaking buildings, and people gathering outside on the streets. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan will fly to the area Sunday afternoon, his office said. The area is "no stranger to having these seismic events," but Sunday's quake is considered major, CNN Meteorologist Reynolds Wolf reported. The U.S. Geological Survey initially reported the quake had a magnitude of 7.3, then revised it down to 7.2. The last quake of that magnitude in Turkey -- a 7.2 tremor in Duzce in 1999 -- killed 894 people, the USGS reported. A 7.6 earthquake in Izmit, Turkey, killed more than 17,000 people the same year, according to the USGS. Sunday's major quake hit at 1:41 p.m. local time and was followed by at least seven aftershocks, American and Turkish monitoring agencies reported. Separately, Deputy Prime Minister Besir Atalay told reporters some 10 buildings had collapsed in Van city and around 25-30 buildings collapsed in the nearby district of Ercis. The US Geological Survey measured the quake at 7.3 magnitude and said that an aftershock was of 5.6 magnitude had also been registered. The epicentre of the aftershock, which occurred at 11.56 Irish time, was located 19km northeast of Van, the institute added. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has cancelled his official programme and was due to visit the quake region on Sunday, said NTV. The city airport received damage from the quake, reported the Anatolia news agency but added it did not disrupt the air traffic, quoting civilian airflight authorities. Van, a city of 380,000 inhabitants mostly Kurds, is located more than 1,200 kilometres from the capital Ankara. The quake was also felt in the neighbouring provinces, said media reports. Turkey is earthquake-prone due to being crossed by several fault lines. In 1999, two strong quakes in the heavily-populated and industrialised regions of northwest Turkey left some 20,000 dead.

Situation: A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.6 shook southeastern Turkey on Sunday, Turkey's Kandilli Observatory said, triggering the collapse of buildings and killing many people, according to a local mayor. State-run media reported 50 people had been injured, while the prime minister's office said the earthquake had caused a loss of life and damage. No figures were available on the death toll. "A lot of buildings collapsed, many people killed, but we don't know the number. We are waiting for emergency help, its very urgent," Zulfukar Arapoglu, the mayor of Ercis district, which was hit badly, told the news broadcaster NTV. "We need tents urgently and rescue teams. We don't have any ambulances, and we only have one hospital. We have many killed and injured," he said. Emergency teams were trying to rescue people believed to be trapped in a building in Van, near the Iranian border, state-run news agency Anatolian said. The termor completely ruined 50 appartment buildings, including a dormitory in Van as well as the neighboring town of Ercis, the Kandilli Observatory said. About 1,000 buildings have been crippled.
