Nearly 70 dead bats found in Tucson

TUCSON - Nearly 70 bats have been found dead in Tucson and Arizona Game and Fish officials are searching for answers.
One possibility is unseasonably warm temperatures in the city.
Game and Fish officials say the bats are Mexican free-tailed and should have migrated to Mexico two months ago.

The Arizona Daily Star says a man walking his dog Monday morning discovered the bat carcasses. They were strewn across a walking path that runs under a bridge on East Speedway where the road crosses the Pantano Wash.
Seven of the bats found on the ground were alive. All of the dead bats and three live ones were sent to the Arizona Department of Health Services laboratory in Phoenix for rabies testing.

Mystery as scores of starlings found dead in village garden

An investigation has begun into the mysterious and “highly unusual” deaths of scores of starlings which were found in the garden of a village house.

The RSPCA, which was called to the scene, said the most likely explanation was that the starlings were being chased by a predator Photo: JASON BRYANT/APEX

Seventy-five birds were found in an area measuring only 12ft in diameter, each with severe injuries including broken beaks and legs, and abdominal wounds. Only six were alive and they were put to sleep.

The householder, Julie Knight, 53, a nurse, returned to her home in the Somerset village of Croxley at 4pm on Sunday to discover the grisly scene.

“It was like something out of a horror film, like Hitchcock’s The Birds. It was absolutely terrifying," she said. “The sky was raining starlings. One of my neighbours saw them. They seemed to just fall out of the sky.

“The only way to describe what they looked like is that they seemed to have had a fright and were petrified. I have been a country girl all my life and I've never seen anything like it.”

The RSPCA, which was called to the scene, said the most likely explanation was that the starlings were being chased by a predator, possibly a sparrow hawk.

Thousands of dead birds fall out of the sky, North and South America

Thousands of Birds fall from the sky in South America at the same time thousands fell from the skies in Arkansas....

WARNING More than 1000 birds fall dead from Sky in Arkansas 12-31-2010 New Years Eve

Look at the following web service for yourself folks. Something is killing mass amounts of birds and fish worldwide. This is by no means a rare event for the past year. Something is happening. In the military Parakeets are used as early warning system to detect chemical attacks.
The following copy and pasted from RSOE Emergency and Disaster Information Service
    Budapest, Hungary
    http://hisz.rsoe.hu/alertmap/index2.php
About 1,000 black birds fell from the sky over Beebe on Friday night, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission said in a news release Saturday. Around [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-nBhYN738YU#"]11:30[/ame] p.m., the commission began receiving phone calls about the birds, most of which were dead and fell over a 1-mile span, the release said. Wildlife officer Robby King collected about 65 dead birds that will be sent to the Arkansas Livestock and Poultry Commission lab and the National Wildlife Health Center lab in Madison, Wis. Officers flew over the area and determined no birds had fallen outside that part of the city, the release said. Commission ornithologist Karen Rowe said in the release that the flock could have been hit by lightning or high-altitude hail. Or the birds could have died from stress if disturbed from their roost by fireworks celebrating the New Year. Beebe has hired the commission to dispose of the birds.

Tonnes of farm fish found dead

DONG THAP - More than 150 tonnes of red tilapias have died en masse in the past week in Cao Lanh District in the southern province of Dong Thap, resulting in losses of VND35 billion (S$2.2 million) for aquaculture farmers.
Red tilapias are the world's most popular farmed fish. They are fast growing and low in mercury.
The dead fish were being raised by 41 households along the Can Lo River. It was the first time such a disaster has occurred.
<table width="300" align="right" border="0" cellpadding="2" cellspacing="2"><tbody><tr><td> <noscript>[IMG]</noscript> </td></tr></tbody></table>"Tests on the fish and water samples reveal the deaths were caused by frequent ebb tides and the high densities of fish kept caged in pens," said Vu Thi Nhung, head of the provincial Department of Natural Resources and Environment's Environmental Protection Division.
The tests were conducted by the department and Can Tho University. Nhung added that ebb tides created high amounts of organic substances in the water, which helped make oxygen levels below regulated levels.
The density of the fish in pens was 130-200 per square metre, much higher than the 90-150.
"The more organic substances deposited, the less oxygen in the water. This is what killed them," said Nhung.
She added that the department did not have any plan to support local farmers who lost their fish. But it will hold training courses to make sure farmers understand the proper technology for raising the fish.

Thousands of dead crabs have washed up along the Kent coast – the latest in a series of bizarre animal deaths sweeping the world.

More than 40,000 Devil crabs – also known as Velvet swimming crabs – were found strewn along beaches in Thanet along with dead starfish, lobsters, sponges and anemones.

Experts believe the crabs died from hypothermia after the UK’s coldest Deecember in 120 years.

The crab deaths are the latest in a series of mass animal deaths all around the world.

In Florida thousands of dead fish have been found floating in a creek, while in Texas 200 American Coots were discovered dead on a bridge in Tyler.

In Wilson County, Tennessee, 100 blackbirds dropped dead from the sky and in New Zealand, hundreds of Red Snapper fish washed up dead.
Brazil scientists have also been left baffled after 100 tons of sardines, catfish and croaker washed up dead near Parangua.

Bookies Paddy Power are even taking bets on which country will next fall foul of the global phenomonen ‘Aflockalypse’, which has left people puzzled and some even fearing it’s the end of the world.
The UK has been installed as the bookies 2/1 favourite to report the next unexplained mass bird death with Ireland the 4/1 second favourite.

2 million fish found dead in Maryland

    By the CNN Wire Staff
    January 7, 2011 -- Updated 0241 GMT (1041 HKT)

(CNN) -- Authorities in Maryland are investigating the deaths of about 2 million fish in Chesapeake Bay.
"Natural causes appear to be the reason," the Maryland Department of the Environment said in a news release. "Cold water stress exacerbated by a large population of the affected species (juvenile spot fish) appears to be the cause of the kill."
The investigation comes days after the deaths of an estimated 100,000 fish in northwest Arkansas. Authorities suspect disease was to blame there, a state spokesman said.
In Maryland, preliminary tests showed water quality to be acceptable, officials said.

"The affected fish are almost exclusively juvenile spot fish, 3 to 6 inches in length," the Maryland department said. A recent survey "showed a very strong population of spot in the bay this year. An increased juvenile population and limited deep water habitat would likely compound the effects of cold water stress."
Large winter kills of spot fish have occurred at least twice before in the state, in 1976 and 1980, the department said.

Thousands Of Fish Dead In Spruce Creek

    Posted: 4:49 pm EST January 4, 2011Updated: 8:32 am EST January 5, 2011
VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. -- Thousands of dead fish were floating in Volusia County Tuesday. They were all in Spruce Creek in Port Orange. The fish kill is unusual because it is warm, according to people who live along the creek. <hr> [IMG] MUST SEE! 99-Photo Strange News Slideshow <hr> It's been a week since there were freezing temperatures, but there are fish lining the banks. Some said it's the worst kill they've ever seen; thousands of fish lined the twists and turns of Spruce Creek. The sheer number of fish and the smell were both overwhelming."It was fun last night trying to sleep with the smell going on," said resident Sunny Morningstar."Even with your windows closed and everything?" WFTV reporter Jason Allen asked."Yes, yes," Morningstar said.Buzzards and pelicans flocked to the site Tuesday and swarmed above the water. They filled trees and private boat docks and waited at the water's edge for an easy meal.Kayakers on the creek told WFTV, that during their five-hour paddle, they'd seen fish around every bend and it appeared to be one of the most extensive kills they had seen."This looks a little worse than last year, at least this area. I don't remember this being that populated as it is this time," resident Mike Kovach said. The Fish and Wildlife Commission was aware of the kill. A representative said it started last week. The representative blamed last week's cold temperatures and speculated the kill wasn't growing, but that winds were causing fish to just pile up.Most of the fish were mullet, ladyfish and catfish, and not the valuable sporting fish called snook that died in mass during a cold spell last year.Residents told WFTV the fish kill is big enough that it's attracting brown and white pelicans from the beach, which are birds they rarely see this far inland.Copyright 2011 by wftv.com. First birds dropped dead from the skies, now thousands of fish have died in Arkansas.
Officials are investigating what may have killed some 100,000 fish in the Arkansas River in the northwestern section of the state, authorities said on Sunday.
Deceased fresh water drum littered 20 miles of the river near Ozark, Keith Stephens of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission told the Daily News.
"It appears that it could be a disease, because it just affected one species," he said. "We don't believe it's environmental, because it would have killed a lot of other fish."
It is not uncommon for a disease to kill so many in such a short period of time, Stephens said, because the fish are "concentrated in the area right now," and cold temperatures means it "would pass very quickly."
The dead fish were first found on Thursday. Fisheries officials are conducting tests to determine how they died.
This isn't the first time such a mass death of aquatic life has occurred in Arkansas.
"We have fishkills from time to time, it's not unusual," he said, adding that several have occurred in the last five years.
This fish mystery took place more than 125 miles from the town of Beebe, where officials are still trying to determine what caused thousands of blackbirds to suddenly fall from the sky on New Year's Eve.

Hundreds of snapper dead on beaches

    By Vaimoana Tapaleao

Fisheries officials are investigating the death of hundreds of snapper washed up on Coromandel Peninsula beaches.
Beachgoers at Little Bay and Waikawau Bay found the fish - many with their eyes missing - dead on the sand yesterday.
Aucklander James Hughes, who was visiting friends, said they were sitting around when children in their group ran towards them holding fish.
"We said, 'Where'd you get them?' and they said they just started floating up to the beach."
Mr Hughes and others on the beach began walking towards the spot where the fish had washed up, and found many dead fish in the water too.
"We spoke to boaties coming in and they said there was a carpet of them floating in the water."
A Department of Conservation official told Mr Hughes fish in the Coromandel area were starving because of weather conditions.

"That's just completely untrue. This was something deliberate and it's just wrong," Mr Hughes said.

Ministry of Fisheries official Brendon Mikkelsen said the fish had been in the water for at least 12 hours and would be unsafe to eat.

Last night, another ministry official said the matter was being investigated.

It would be illegal to deliberately dump snapper, but there could be an innocent explanation, such as a net splitting.

Concern as fish die in beauty spot brook

Concern as fish die in beauty spot brook

Published on Tue Jan 04 08:29:03 GMT 2011

SCORES of fish have been found dead in a brook running through a Peterborough beauty spot.
Walkers have been left horrified at the sight of the fish lying on top of the waters in Werrington Brook, in Cuckoo’s Hollow, Peterborough.
Environment Agency officials have been alerted but say it could be some days before the results of tests to find out the cause of the death are known.
It is feared by some residents that a factory fire nearby last month may have polluted the brook, causing the fish to die.
Ward councillor John Fox had alerted the Environment Agency in the aftermath of a major blaze in a nearby cosmetics factory warehouse off Lincoln Road, in Werrington on Tuesday, December 14.

He said: “We could be looking at another environmental disaster similar to when oil from a garage in Lincoln Road leaked into the water and killed all the fish a few years ago.
“After the fire at the Potter and Moore Innovations warehouse and all the water we used we noticed the water at Cuckoo’s Hollow had turned a milky colour but we don’t know yet whether that was to blame.”

The haven is only just recovering from a the death of scores of fish in July 2010 which were revealed to be the victims of a heatwave after being spotted floating on the surface by residents.

An Environment Agency spokeswoman said that more would be known about the cause of death of the fishes once the tests have been completed and the ice had thawed.
She added that fish in shallow water which ices over can die due to oxygen levels dropping significantly.

Werrington Neighbourhood Council chairman and Friends of Cuckoo’s Hollow member David Hedges said the news was “a disaster”.

He said: “We will be talking to Peterborough City Council to look to see if Cuckoo’s Hollow has been polluted but it is also incredibly sad.

“We think it might be a result of the chemicals from the fire a few weeks ago which would be a shame and another environmental blow.”

Dog walker Adrian Clarke, from Rudyard Grove, Werrington, alerted the ET after he spotted fish lying dead as the thaw took hold.

He said: “Its a disaster really you can see all the fish are dead from the little ones to a two and half foot pike.”

Unusual Fish Kill Found in Annapolis

Fish on the shores of Bay Ridge and Sandy Point State Park died of natural causes due to "cold stress" because of the low temperature of the water in the Chesapeake Bay.
By Susan Jenkins | Email the author | December 31, 2010

Some Bay Ridge residents were taking a peaceful walk along the community beach when they stumbled upon a disturbing site — a large fish kill. Similar sights were reported to the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE), who oversees the investigation of fish kills throughout the state, on Dec. 29 in Calvert County near Calvert Cliffs.

According to Chris Luckett of the MDE, additional fish kills were reported along the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay, including in Bay Ridge and along the beach at Sandy Point State Park in Annapolis. The good news is that the fish apparently died of natural causes from "cold stress" and not from disease or pollution, as some people feared.

"There are tens of thousands, perhaps more," said Luckett, when describing the number of dead fish that have been identified as spot.
When the water temperature begins to decrease in the fall, spot move to deeper waters or the ocean. Luckett said it's not the first time a large fish kill has happened and cited an incident in 1978 where about 15 million of the same species died.

"The fish species we are seeing dead are supposed to leave the upper bay by now and water temperatures are nearly as cold as they've ever been for late December (about 2 degrees Celsius)," according to Dawn Stoltzfus, MDE director of communications. "The drop in water temperatures has been quite quick this month."

Luckett added that the fish simply don't have the metabolisms to deal with the colder temperatures and their death is a natural occurrence.

When asked what the cleanup process would be for the dead fish on the beach in Bay Ridge, Luckett stated that "mother nature" would take care of it.

Although the MDE is aware of the situation in Bay Ridge and at Sandy Point so it does not need to be reported again, residents should report future incidents of fish kill immediately by calling 877-224-7229. Staff is always on call 24 hours a day (including weekends and holidays) to ensure reports are addressed.

Probable causes of fish kill can be natural (including disease, low dissolved oxygen, thermal, shock, seasonal/spawning stress and stranding) or from pollution. There were 13 fish kill incidents reported in Anne Arundel County during 2009, which was more than any other county.
For more information, visit the MDE's website.

Updated — The MDE released a statement on Jan. 5 estimating that 2 million fish in the Chesapeake Bay have died and the investigation into the fish kill continues. Although Patch was told that about 15 million spot died in a similar incident in 1978, the release stated that MDE records show the incident occurred in late January 1976 and a smaller number died in January 1980. The fish kill is reportedly "centered on the bay from Bay Bridge to Poplar Island." To read the complete release, see the MDE's website.

On Jan. 6, Patch received reports and photos of dead fish washed up on shores in Kent Island along with sightings of seagulls and other birds out on the water.

Various fish have washed up on a local park due to the recent winter storm.
    Reporter:

    paul.murphy@wndu.com

Various fish have washed up on a local park due to the recent winter storm.
According to our reporting partners at the Elkhart Truth, frozen gobies, trout, crayfish, and mudpuppies have been washing up on the beach along Washington Park .
Indiana DNR biologists think the storm and the massive waves washed the fish onto the beach.
Most fish move to deeper water in the winter where the water is warmer, however the fish now on the shore were not able to do that before the storm hit.
The National Weather Service says wind gusts reached 40 miles per hour during that storm.

Dead fish clog lake at airport

    <cite>December 19, 2010</cite>
THOUSANDS of dead fish have been found floating on the surface of a small lake inside Sydney Airport.
Authorities were still trying to determine the cause of the fish kill in North Pond yesterday.
The pond is on the northern boundary of the airport 600 metres from the domestic terminals and close to the area where Qantas maintains and repairs aircraft.

The oval-shaped pond, which is about 300 metres long and 150 metres at its widest point, receives water from the Cooks River, via the Alexandra Canal at St Peters.
The fish were found on Friday before a clean-up and testing procedures were ordered.
Sydney Airport Corporation spokesman Michael Somares said an ''incident'' had been reported and an investigation was under way. ''The area has been sealed off.''

Authorities probe dead fish in Haitian lake

    (AFP) – Dec 26, 2010

PORT-AU-PRINCE — Haitian authorities were planning Sunday to ban consumption of fish from a lake on the border with the Dominican Republic where scores of dead fish have been found dead in recent days.
"Abnormal numbers of dead fish have been found in the waters and on the shores of Lake Azuei," Michel Chancy, a government state secretary, told reporters.
"It could be due to water poisoning, but there are also other hypotheses."
Officials from the Haitian government were on location trying to determine the exact cause of the problem, he said.
According to Chancy, the government was awaiting the results of laboratory analyses before making a decision.

UK. Dead fish discovered in canal marina near Abergavenny

    Sunday, 02 January 2011

Environment Agency Wales can confirm that what could be hundreds of dead fish, mostly bream, carp and roach, have been found in the marina on the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal at Goytre Wharf near Abergavenny earlier today.
A 30cm drop in the water level at the marina by work upstream could be a contributory factor, but more than likely the cold weather, ice and lack of oxygen are to blame.
Initial investigations reveal there is no pollution detectable but no conclusion has been drawn as officers continue their work.
Smaller fish have, however, been found alive in the marina.
Officers are advising people that no attempts should be made to remove or go near to any fish at this stage.

A survey conducted by the Federation of Fishermen's Colony of Paraná, Paranaguá on the coast of the state, indicates that at least 100 tons of fish (sardine, croaker and catfish) have turned up dead since last Thursday off the coast of Parana.

    O relatório será divulgado hoje.
The report will be released today.

"We will wait to see what happened, but speculations suggest that fish may have died due to an environmental imbalance, dropping a fishing boat or leakage of chemicals," he says.

Por meio de sua assessoria de imprensa, a prefeitura de Paranaguá informou que a venda de frutos do mar está, por precaução, temporariamente suspensa na região.
