The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission said they were aware of the problem and biologists were in the process of collecting dead fish for analysis. Their initial thoughts were that it was not an environmental factor like heat, lack of dissolved oxygen or a chemical spill that caused the problem. When I got to the reservoir, I noticed that the die-off was very species specific. The vast majority of the fish I saw dead were carp. This intrigued me because carp can usually survive the worst water conditions. The fact that I saw only a few other species, really no more than I would expect, to see on any given day around the reservoir, makes me think the die-off is due to some sort of disease that affects carp. I’m not a fisheries biologist, but I’m going to guess we will find out that it was something like the three or so koi herpes viruses or a similar ailment that killed these fish. Another common name is “carp pox.” The virus causes the gills of the fish to be unable to extract oxygen from the water. The fish basically suffocates. It will be a few days before the official findings will be back and the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission can make a definitive statement of the cause of this fish kill.

Well, it certainly is eerie.

Tens of thousands of dead fish, along with dead seagulls, washed up on the shores of Lake Erie on Wednesday afternoon in yet another mysterious mass animal death.

Rick Nicholls, Member of Provincial Parliament for the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario, is mystified by the mass Lake Erie animal death, telling NewsNet5: "First thing that crossed my mind, is there any potential danger to humans from a health point of view? Secondly, as I got more and more into it, what's the cause of this sudden fish kill in the lake?"

Samples of the dead fish and dead birds have been sent to a lab for analysis. Currently, the Ontario Ministries of the Environment in Canada is pursuing several avenues, looking into whether a spill occurred that negatively impacted the ecosystem, according to NewsNet5.

Another possibility for the Lake Erie fish deaths is an inversion. An inversion is a natural phenomenon that occurs when cold water, which has lower oxygen levels, goes to the lake's surface. This can suffocate the fish, according to CNN.

"Essentially it's a rolling over of the lake," Ontario Ministry of the Environment spokeswoman Kate Jordan told Canada's Chatham Daily News on Tuesday. "Something - whether it be a storm, or cooler temperatures at night, or strong winds - triggers a temperature change in the lake."

However, researchers who tested the Lake Erie waters have not yet observed anything out of the ordinary in their field measurements, such as temperature, pH or oxygen levels, according to the Chatham Daily News. Jordan added, "We did not observe any spill or pollution impacting the lake."

Officials are still awaiting more intensive lab analysis results on the dead fish found at Lake Erie, which included carp, sheepshead, perch, catfish and suckers.

Dr. David Colby, the Chatham-Kent medical officer of health, told The Windsor Star that he has not seen or smelled anything like it before. "All kinds of people were woken out of a sound sleep by a stench and it was like a septic tank was backing up," he told The Windsor Star of the smell of thousands of dead fish that began stinking up the region Friday.

Colby mentioned another possibility for the mass death to The Windsor Star:

He said there are other possible causes for the dead fish such as a fish disease called viral hemorrhagic septicemia and Type E botulism, a bacterial toxin which would kill birds that feed on dead fish. He said he's already seen a sick gull near the dead fish but that is not conclusive evidence. ​

This would not pose a threat to humans, according to Colby.

Earlier this month, thousands of dead fish washed ashore along the Texas coast from the Colorado River to Galveston Island, Kens5 reported. Biologists suspected low oxygen levels caused the deaths.

The dead fish and seagulls found at Lake Erie is reminiscent of the mass animal deaths that occurred around the world in early 2011. Thousands of dead birds fell from the skies in Arkansas, hundreds of dead birds were found along a California highway, more were found in Kentucky and Louisiana, while millions of dead fish appeared in Maryland's Chesapeake Bay. Dead birds were also reported in Italy and Sweden, along with massive fish kills in New Zealand and Brazil.

At the time, Arkansas residents thought doomsday was near.

"I think the switchboard lit up pretty good," Beebe police Capt. Eddie Cullum said last January, according to Mother Nature News. "For all the doomsdayers, that was definitely the end of the world."

Several hundred Humboldt squid washed ashore Sunday afternoon along the Santa Cruz County shoreline and marine biologists are working to uncover the cause.

Some observers speculated that the high tide may have something do to with the sea creatures essentially committing mass suicide. Conservation of the Humboldt squid off the coast of California is not a major concern because the squid can reproduce in mass numbers.

Hanna Rosen, a graduate student at Stanford University’s Hopkins Marine Station, told San Francisco’s CBS affiliate that she saw some witnesses try to bring some of the squid back into the sea, only to watch them return to the beach.

“They don’t see the shore very often,” Rosen said. “So it might just be that they don’t understand what’s going on around them, and they’re just trying to get away and don’t realize that if they swim towards the shore, they’re going to run out of water eventually.”

Scientists from Stanford said the squid were predominantly juveniles as adult Humboldt squid can grow up to six-feet long and 100 pounds. They added that the squid were probably conceived and born in Monterey Bay, but were unable to navigate their way out to open waters.

Sunday’s phenomenon marks the third squid stranding in the past six weeks, from Santa Cruz to Pacific Grove. Marine biologists are currently analyzing the contents of the animals’ stomachs to see if they ingested something that might have disoriented them.

Humboldt squid have not been observed in the Monterey Bay waters for a few years, making recent events all the more suspicious. Some scientists attribute the phenomenon to this year’s El Nino weather patterns, which could have attracted them to the cooler environs of Northern and Central California’s coast.

William Gilly, a biology professor at Stanford, said mass strandings are frequent when squid begin to occupy a new area. He said the strandings along the West Coast have historically stopped if the squid successfully establish themselves or evacuate the new area.

“My theory is that when the squid invade a new area — they are returning to Monterey Bay for the first time in nearly three years, and the squid are only 8 or 9 months old — they follow an algorithm (which is to) swim and find productive areas, especially by investigating anomalies, until you run into trouble,” he told the Monterey Herald. “That mission takes some of them onto the beach. The question I can’t answer is why they stop doing this after they successfully colonize an area. Perhaps the real pioneers are selected out, or maybe the survivors of a stranding go back to sea and warn the others.”

Also known as the jumbo flying squid, the Humboldt squid typically grows to about five feet long. The squid is capable of changing its coloration and fishermen have dubbed it, “Diablo rojo”, or red devil because its skin flashes red and white colors while hunting. They have been known to eat up to 60 different species of fish, and will change their size from generation to generation—depending on food availability.

Many concerned readers contacted the Courier over the weekend after spotting the dead marine life.

Department of Fisheries spokesman on fish health Paul Hillier said the department had visited the site several times this week, but had been unable to find suitable samples of fish to test – with most too decayed.

Mr Hillier said it was too early to confirm what had caused the deaths with water
samples also being tested.

“From the reports received and observations of the Fisheries officers, it appears that excess weed in the water system has probably depleted the dissolved oxygen, which may have caused the fish kill,” he said.

“But the fish health researchers can’t confirm that conclusively until the appropriate testing is completed.”

Mr Hillier said the public can notify authorities of a fish kill by contacting the nearest Department of Fisheries or Department of Water office or call FishWatch on 1800 815 507.
