[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]MERCURY-DIRECTED CME: [/FONT]On Sept 8th around 2300 UT, the SOHO and STEREO spacecraft detected a significant CME emerging from the farside of the sun. Earth is not in the line of fire, but the planet Mercury is. Analysts at the Goddard Space Weather Lab estimate that the cloud will reach the innermost planet on Sept. 9th at 12:00 UT (plus minus 7 hours). Click to view a movie of their CME model:

NASA's MESSENGER spacecraft is in orbit around Mercury, so it will have a front row seat for the impact. Researchers are keen to learn how Mercury's magnetosphere responds to CMEs. In particular, they wonder if CMEs can overpower Mercury's magnetic field and sputter atoms right off the planet's surface. Thanks to the Goddard forecast, MESSENGER's controllers know the CME is coming, and they can prepare to observe the impact.


Interplanetary space weather forecasting is a new thing. It became possible in 2010-2011 when NASA and ESA spacecraft surrounded the sun. Working together, SOHO, the Solar Dynamics Observatory, STEREO-A and STEREO-B now have the entire star under surveillance. CMEs can be tracked no matter where they go, which means space weather isn't just for Earth anymore.

A magnitude 6.4 earthquake has struck off the northwest coast of Vancouver Island, officials at the Pacific Geo-science Center have confirmed, but there are no reports of damage or tsunami warnings.​

Initial reports estimated the quake was as large as magnitude 6.8, but those estimates were later downgraded to 6.4. People report buildings swaying for several minutes from the Fraser Valley to Campbell River at around 12:41 PT p.m., but there are no reports of damage.​

Geomagnetic Storm in Effect - More Solar Flares On The Way​

​

A major geomagnetic storm is ongoing. The latest K values of Dourbes are 6 and 5. The latest estimated Kp values are 5 and 7. Active to geomagnetic storm conditions are possible until the second half of September 10.​

A strong burst of charged particles was measured by the GOES satellite. The flare was also seen as a light flash in PROBA2/SWAP and SDO/AIA images. Solar radiation reaches the Earth after 8 minutes. This flare is up to now the strongest flare of the current solar cycle.​

Solar Update / Fast Growing Sunspot

C9.2 Flare: A near M-Class solar flare reaching C9.2 took place at 20:51 UTC Wednesday around new Sunspot 1297 which formed in the southern hemisphere. Keep an eye on this fast growing region for further activity.

Faint CME: While watching the latest Lasco C2 movie you can see a faint but full halo Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) blasting away from the sun and a portion of it may impact earth. It appears that a majority of the material will sail wide. This took place during the early hours Wednesday morning.

Solar Update: Solar activity has been fairly low since the C9.9 Solar Flare around Sunspot 1296 on Monday. There will remain a chance for an M-Class flare around the region of 1295-1296.

A new sunspot that should be numbered 1297 is quickly forming in the southern hemisphere between regions 1287 and 1290. These spots will rotate onto the western limb by the weekend.

NASA officials announced this week the now-defunct Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite is expected to fall back to Earth in the coming weeks. Situation: A real UFO flew over the Coachella Valley on Wednesday. It was most likely a fireball - a fragment of an asteroid that entered Earth’s atmosphere - a NASA scientists said late Wednesday. Experts and residents offered conflicting explanations, though, about the bright light the streaked through the Southwest. Residents spotted it soaring across the sky about 7:45 p.m. It looked like a falling star that continued crashing toward a mountain, a Desert Sun reporter in Palm Springs said. Some described it as a ball of fire. Most called it green, while others said it started as a small white dot before morphing into yellow then green. “A friend and I saw a huge green meteor falling toward Palm Desert, with a tail burning for five seconds or so,” said resident Michael Azzarella, who was driving on Bob Hope Drive at the time.

"I have never seen anything this huge enter the earth's atmosphere, nor have I ever witnessed one so bright and colorful that lasted for so long. It was at least four or five seconds!" Kathy Westmoreland of San Dimas wrote to The Desert Sun. The reports - and varying explanations - began flooding into The Desert Sun, into local dispatchers and onto Twitter almost immediately after the sighting. An airport tower official in Scottsdale, Ariz., told police it was a meteor in the sky. Most residents eventually concluded it was a meteoroid. It was actually a “near-earth asteroid” no bigger than a basketball, said the manager of NASA’s Near Earth Object Program, according to a Los Angeles Time blog. Still others speculated it was NASA’s UARS satellite, which is set to reenter the atmosphere sometime this month, or just space debris. “I don’t know whether it was a meteor or just debris. I don’t know,” National Weather Service meteorologist Noel Isla told The Desert Sun. [FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]INCOMING CME: [/FONT]Yesterday, Sept. 14th, an eruption near sunspot 1289 hurled a CME in the general direction of Earth. Analysts at the Goddard Space Weather Lab expect the cloud to deliver a glancing blow to our planet's magnetic field on Sept 17th around 04:30 UT.
