Nicaragua's San Cristobal volcano is spewing ash and gas, provoking a shudder of small earthquakes. The Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies says the volcano has been erupting for two days, causing quakes of up to magnitude-4. The institute says Saturday's eruptions pose no imminent threat to the surrounding population. The 5725-foot (1,745-meter) volcano is about 70 miles (110 kilometers) west of the capital, Managua.

Montserrat's Soufriere Hills Volcano has erupted, hurling hot rocks more than half a mile in the air, and setting buildings ablaze in the abandoned capital Plymouth. Roderick Stewart Director of the volcano observatory in Montserrat, said buildings burned for several hours but no one was injured or evacuated. According to Mr. Stewart, the blast was smaller than the July explosion which spewed ash some 40,000 feet into the air. "It generally happen without any warning ... the first thing I heard was the explosion which alerted me that something was going on ... I went outside and there was a lot of ash in the atmosphere. Mr. Stewart added that there were lightening strikes associated with the ash clouds and glowing rocks could be seen on the side of the volcano that had been thrown out from the lava dome. "We could also see that a lava flow had gone down into Plymouth which had been abandoned a long time ago and there were actually some building burning several miles from the volcano," he added.

Description:
An increase in activity at Montserrat’s Soufrière Hills Volcano has led to the evacuation of approximately 70 people and has sent a considerable amount of ash across to Antigua. Activity of the volcano increased drastically last Thursday when it emitted more explosions than normal. However, because the instruments used to monitor the volcano give very little in the way of warning, no overnight warning was issued to prepare inhabitants for the increased activity that occurred last Friday. Then, early last Saturday morning, two very explosive eruptions took place, one at 5 a.m. and the other at 7 a.m., local time. Both eruptions sent ash 12 to13 kilometres (approximately 356, 000 feet) high. Dr. Nico Fournier from the Montserrat Volcano Observatory told the Antigua Sun that the decision to evacuate and restrict access to a specific area of concern (Area B) was made following a National Disaster Preparedness and Response Advisory Committee (NDPRAC) meeting. Zone Area B includes Isles Bay, Waterworks, Parts of Old Town and Lower Happy Hill. Asked how the affected members of the population are faring, Fournier explained that the ash has travelled island wide and is particularly heavy in the south. “They are used to it to a certain extent. The most worrying thing is that we have to clean the ash,” Fournier said of the volcano which first erupted in July 1995. Since the 7:30 a.m. eruption, the volcano, which has been given a hazard level of four, has remained quiet. A few days of observation are needed, Fournier said, in order to make any predictions on further activity. Cecil Matthew, meteorologist at The Antigua and Barbuda Meteological Services confirmed that last Saturday’s ash fall was considerable. He said it was due to the high pressure system in the area at the time. Evidence of the ash fall was seen on cars and in the skies over Antigua.

Situation

The recent earthquake swarm underneath Yellowstone National Park appears to be slowing down considerably. It's good news for the people at the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory who monitored close to 500 small earthquakes in the area during a six-day stretch. It had been the most intense swarm of earthquakes in Yellowstone since 1985. "Everybody was mobilized," said Jacob Lowenstern on Monday. Yellowstone National Park normally sees at least 1,000 earthquakes every year. "We saw half of a year's earthquakes in less than a week," Lowenstern added. The vast majority of the earthquakes were small and never felt by people within the park, but a few were strong enough to be felt by visitors and park staff. The strongest earthquake was a magnitude 3.9 on the Richter scale. Yellowstone National Park sits on top of a geologic "hot spot" and has historically been a very active area for earthquakes and the occasional volcanic eruption. The last massive eruption took place 640,000 years ago. Lowenstern said the Volcano Observatory staff does continually assess the risk for another volcanic eruption, but it's his belief this latest swarm was not indicative of anything more than just a series of relatively normal earthquakes. "We didn't see any other indicators that told us we needed to be overly concerned," he said.

Residents of Nuku'alofa woke up to the spectacular sight of a sprouting white cloud of volcanic origin, which could be seen clearly on the south west horizon from the Nuku'alofa waterfront this morning. An underwater volcanic eruption in the vicinity of the twin islands of Hunga Tonga and Hunga Ha'apai sent up a huge column of white and grey cloud that stood out against the bright blue sky. A spokesperson from the Geological Division of the Ministry of Lands said that the smoke was reported to the Ministry by the Tonga Defence Services yesterday, and the government geologist and staff of the Geological Division were on their way to have a closer look at the smoke. They are expected to return this afternoon with their report. They believe that there was an underwater eruption following a strong sharp tremor that was felt in Nuku'alofa on Friday. She said they believed that the underwater activity is taking place to the west of the twin islands of Hunga Tonga and Hunga Ha'apai within sight of Nuku'alofa.

Situation

Mount Redoubt released a plume of steam and ash that rose three miles high Sunday afternoon, and geologists at the Alaska Volcano Observatory immediately upgraded volcano's aviation color code status to orange and its alert status to "watch." Ashfall from the explosion could be seen on the upper south flank of the volcano, but the National Weather Service had yet to detect any airborne ash that might create an aviation hazard, AVO chief scientist Tom Murray said. It was the first discharge of ash that's occurred at Redboubt since its current state of unrest began in late January, Murray said, but his staff was not yet describing the event as an actual eruption. "It's a debatable term, even amongst our circles," Murray said. The ash didn't appear to be generated by new magma, and the discharge wasn't explosive enough to be described as a full eruption, he said. "It was visible from Kenai, and it put some ash up in the air, but it's not the thing ... that could have a big impact on all of Cook Inlet." A team from the observatory flew to Mount Redoubt after the explosion was detected around 1 p.m. and observed steam still issuing from the volcano by mid-afternoon. "The tremor is continuing, and that's why we're continuing to watch closely," Murray said. "The situation could evolve quickly." Mount Redoubt is a 10,197-foot stratovolcano based on the west side of Cook Inlet, about 100 miles southwest of Anchorage.

Galeras volcano in southern Colombia erupted on Friday, forcing some 3,000 people living in its shadow to evacuate and the government to put the Narino department on the border with Ecuador under a red alert. The eruption at 3.55pm (0755 AEDT) blanketed the area with ash but caused no injuries or damage, the Geological Mining Institute and local media said. The evacuation of the area was carried out calmly and methodically since emergency shelters were already set up after Galeras' last eruption on February 20. In all, some 8,000 people live near the volcano.

An undersea volcano located off the coast of Tonga erupted Wednesday, blowing huge amounts of smoke, steam and debris into the sky above. "It's a very significant eruption, on quite a large scale," said Keleti Mafi, the head of Tonga's geological service.

INDONESIA has raised to maximum its alert on the Mount Semeru volcano in East Java, warning of potentially dangerous lava flows, an official at the country's vulcanology centre said yesterday.

The 3,376-metre (11,080-feet) Semeru is one of the most active volcanoes on Java island. Seven people were killed by the mountain's heat clouds in 1994.

The alert status was raised on Friday afternoon after the number of volcanic quakes indicated there may be a bigger eruption, said Surono, head of the country's vulcanology centre.

"We don't want to evacuate residents around the mountain, but we warn those carrying out activities such as sand mining to avoid rivers because of lava flows," said Surono, who goes by one name like many Indonesians.

Indonesians often live and work on the slopes of volcanoes because of the rich volcanic soil and supplies of minerals.

The official said that based on satellite images volcanic activity so far would not disturb air traffic.

The nearest major city to Semeru, the highest peak on Java, is Surabaya. The area is also popular with hikers and nearby Mount Bromo is a well known tourist site.Reuters

A VOLCANO near Tokyo erupted yesterday, spewing hot rocks, ash and a plume of smoke up to 2km into the air and covering parts of the Japanese capital in a light dusting of ash.

There was no major damage in the volcano's sparsely populated vicinity, officials said. No one lives within 4km of the volcano but people working in the area were told on Sunday to evacuate, said Meteorological Agency official Kazuya Kokubo.

NHK public television showed white smoke coming out of the the crater of the 2,568 metre (8,425 feet), snow-capped Mount Asama, which erupted on Sunday, with some grey dust near the top.

No lava could be seen from the side of the volcano, Kokubo said.

Ash drifted as far as Tokyo, about 140km to the southeast.

Visibility in the capital was not affected but television footage showed residents dusting off cars and farmers worrying over ash-covered vegetables.

"I'm 65, but this is the first time this has happened," one farmer told NHK.

The Meteorological Agency had raised its warning level on Sunday after signs of increased seismic activity, telling people not to approach the volcano. Agency official Osamu Inaba said traffic in the area was being restricted.

The agency is keeping its warning level at three out of five, which warns people not to approach the volcano. Residents in cities and villages nearby have also been warned against flying rocks and ash.

An underwater volcano exploded near Tonga in the South Pacific to stunning effect this week. The pictures of gas and steam erupting out of the surface of the water captivated the world.
Here at Wired Science, we love volcanoes — so we decided to use the Tongan eruption to round up some of our favorite volcano eruption pics and present them as big. Above, you can see Mt. Cleveland in Alaska erupting on May 23, 2006 as photographed by NASA's Earth Observatory .

This underwater volcano, Brimstone Pit, was caught erupting by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Submarine Ring of Fire program. You can see the same volcano erupting in the video below. "If we were observing this type of eruptive activity on land we would have to run for our lives!" the researchers note. "At Brimstone Pit the pressure of [1837 feet] of water over the site reduces the power of the explosive bursts."

The Kamchatka province is a highly geologically active area in far Eastern Russia, near Sarah Palin's house. On March 29, 2007, the peninsula's Shiveluch Volcano erupted, sending an ash cloud more than 30,000 feet into the air. NASA's Earth Observatory caught the action.

Mt. Stromboli, located on an Italian island, is famous for its fountain-like eruptions, as captured by Wolfgang Beyer. It's one of the few volcanoes that exists in a state of permanent (and thankfully) moderate eruption. It's been bubbling for more than 2,000 years.

June 26, 2008 Arctic ice melt may be due to undersea volcanoes

[FONT=times new roman,times]The Arctic ice that is supposedly melting, stranding those cuddly looking polar bears, just might be affected by a wave of volcanic eruptions on the ocean floor under the Arctic ice cap. AFP reports on the recently-documented volcanoes, but oddly makes no mention of the possible effect on apocalyptic predictions of global warming.[/FONT]

[FONT=times new roman,times]Recent massive volcanoes have risen from the ocean floor deep under the Arctic ice cap, spewing plumes of fragmented magma into the sea, scientists who filmed the aftermath reported Wednesday.[/FONT]

[FONT=times new roman,times]The eruptions - as big as the one that buried Pompei - took place in 1999 along the Gakkel Ridge, an underwater mountain chain snaking 1,800 kilometres (1,100 miles) from the northern tip of Greenland to Siberia. [/FONT]

[FONT=times new roman,times]Scientists suspected even at the time that a simultaneous series of earthquakes were linked to these volcanic spasms. [/FONT]

Description:
Around 8,000 people were ordered to leave their homes Sunday in Narino province, southwestern Colombia, after a mild eruption of the Galeras Volcano in the province. The 4,276-meter-high volcano, located near the southern Colombian city of Pasto, had a mild eruption at about 7:20 a.m. local time (1220 GMT) Sunday morning, said Martha Calvache, director of the national Geology and Mining Institute. There have been no reports of casualties or material damage. The institute declared a red alert which means an eruption is under way. The regional government ordered an evacuation of the area around Galeras, which is home to around 8,000 people and is some 700 km away from the capital of Bogota. The volcano could be calm for several days, Calvache said. But she warned that it could reactivate, to which she said people should pay close attention.

Situation

Colombia's Galeras volcano erupted on Monday for the second time in 24 hours, showering villages in the surrounding area with ash, but causing no damage or injuries, authorities said. "An eruption of explosive nature has been registered," the national geological institute Ingeominas said in a statement. No damage was reported from an eruption on Sunday, but authorities ordered 8,000 residents to evacuate the area. Residents often stay in their homes even though Ingeominas puts the zone on alert, warning of more eruptions. No immediate impact was reported on the country's coffee crops, a spokesman for the national coffee federation said. An eruption of the volcano, located near the Ecuadorean border, killed 10 people in 1993. Galeras, which has registered minor eruptions in recent years, is closely observed because of the threat it poses to nearby populations. Eight eruptions have rattled the volcano so far this year.

A volcanic eruption on a remote Russian island north of Japan has created a giant ash cloud that threatens passing airplanes, the RIA-Novosti news agency reported on Sunday, citing Russian geologists. The eruption of Sarychev Peak on uninhabited Matua Island, part of the Kuril Islands archipelago in the north Pacific Ocean, began overnight Thursday-Friday and is still underway, the news agency said. It has formed an ash cloud eight kilometres (five miles) high which has spread 310 kilometres to the west, Olga Shestakova, a spokeswoman for the Marine Geology and Geophysics Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, was quoted as saying. ”Information on the eruption has been sent to organisations dealing with the safety of airplanes and ships, as the ash cloud presents a threat to airplane engines and may lead to communications systems failures,” Shestakova said. Sarychev Peak is one of the most active volcanos on the Kuril Islands, a seismically active archipelago that runs northeast from Japan's Hokkaido Island to Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula. The southernmost four islands in the archipelago are disputed between Russia and Japan, but Matua Island, where the volcano is located, is agreed to be Russian territory. It is called Matsuwa Island by the Japanese.

Thermal anomalies and dense sulphur dioxide plumes in Ethiopia appear to indicate that a significant effusive eruption has taken place in the Manda Hararo area of the western Afar region. There is as yet no visual confirmation of the eruption from the ground. There was a VEI=2 eruption at the Manda Hararo volcanic complex in August 2007, and a larger (possibly VEI=3) eruption in the Alu-Dalaffilla region in November 2008. In terms of size, volcanic SO2 expert Prof Simon Carn of Michigan Technical University reports that the current Manda Hararo event seems to lie somewhere between the two. The MODIS thermal alerts service at the University of Hawaii has shown hotspots of varying intensity over a considerable area of the Manda Hararo region since 27 June.
