Situation:

An underwater volcanic eruption is taking place just off Spain's El Hierro island in the Canaries, which has been rocked by thousands of small tremors since July, local officials said Monday.

The eruption is taking place some five kilometres (three miles) from the island at a depth of more than 500 metres (1,500 feet) but its effects will not be felt on the island, said volcanologist Alicia Garcia of the Higher Council of Scientific Research.

"The earthquake monitoring stations on the island recorded the start of an eruption overnight. There is no visible manifestation at the moment," she said. T

he regional government of the archipelago issued a "yellow" volcanic eruption alert -- the second level on a scale of four -- after the island was hit by a 4.3-magnitude quake.

The earthquake was the strongest of more than 8,000 tremors which the Spanish National Geographic Institute has recorded on El Hierro since they began in July.

The majority have been too small to be felt. "There was a volcanic eruption overnight, what we don't know is what is its state, if it has just started and if it is just releasing gases or if it is releasing magma as well," the head of the island's local council, Alpidio Armas, told Spanish public radio.

"If the magma gets out, which appears will be the case, it will mean that the seismic movements will decrease," he added. El Hierro, which means iron in Spanish, is the smallest of Spain's Canary Islands, located in the Atlantic off the coast of Morocco.

It is home to some 11,000 people. The last volcanic eruption on the Canary Islands was on nearby La Palma in 1971.

Targeting a significant Coronal Hole(CH478) which is located 18-24° N Latitude. Best fit regions for a possible 7.6 Magnitude Earthquake mapped from Sun to Earth are : Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Ryukyu Islands Japan or the Taiwan Region.

Second region is targeting a new coronal feature located at 46-50° N Latitude, regions best mapped from Sun to Earth for a 5.5-5.8 magnitude earthquake are: Off the coast Oregon, Vancouver Islands, Northern Italy or the Switzerland Region.

OLR Ionospheric Anomalies are South Japan Islands stretching across to northern India and Central America also have significant readings and a new signature showing up in Chile.

OLR anomalies are this week located : Guam, State Of Yap, Eastern China, Kamchatka Peninsula, Vancouver Islands, Azores, Iceland, Kermadec Islands or the Eastern Australia Region.

Situation:

Spain's Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN) confirmed on Tuesday that an underwater eruption has occurred five kilometres off the southern coastline of El Hierro, the smallest of the Canary Islands. The eruption is Spain’s first since the eruption in 1971 of the Teneguía volcano on the island of La Palma, also in the Canaries.



The IGN says all three of its seismic stations on El Hierro have registered a volcanic tremor of low frequency in the south of the island at La Restinga, the southern-most village in the Canaries. The estimated 537 residents of the town were summonsed to a local football field on Tuesday afternoon to be briefed on evacuation procedures. A Red Alert has since been issued by local authorities for the town. A notice posted on the Emergencia El Hierro website on Tuesday evening stated: “Phase pre-eruptive. It involves the initiation of a preventive evacuation. Make yourself available to the authorities.”

Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero and cabinet colleagues will attend an emergency briefing on the developing situation on Tuesday evening. Scientists from IGN and CSIC (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas), meanwhile, have conducted a reconnaissance flight over the sea to the area south of the island, where they have located dead fish floating on the surface five kilometres from the coast. The dead fish were identified in an area where lower seismic magnitude occurred on October 9, at a depth of approximately 2 km. The fish had probably been killed by gas escaping from the volcano, scientists said. The present volcanic activity is understood to be occurring at a depth of 600 metres below sea level, in the Las Calmas sea. Scientists from IGN, CSIC and the University of Cadiz have established their monitoring base at La Restinga. Efforts are underway to determine if the subsea volcanic vent is widening and if so, in which direction.

Initial reports of the eruption were received from crews on board four separate ships. Local media agency Canarias7 reported on Monday that Government authorities have suspended ferry activities to and from the 285 square-kilometre island. English language newspaper islandconnections.eu reported: “The maritime chief for the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife Antonio Padrón has issued a recomendation that boats should not sail closer than four miles off El Hierro. Divers have also been told to suspend all activities.”
