จากการคาดการณ์ครั้งที่แล้ว พอสรุปได้ว่าภัยพิบัติขนาดใหญ่จะเกิดขึ้นได้จะต้องมีปัจจัยหลายมาเสริมนอกเหนือจากปฏิกริยาดวงอาทิตย์ ซึ่งเป็นไปได้สูงว่าเกี่ยวข้องกับปรากฏการณ์ดาวเคราะห์เรียงตัวหรืออย่างอื่นทั้งบนโลกและนอกโลกที่ยังไม่ทราบสาเหตุ จึงเป็นเหตุผลที่ต้องทำให้เราเก็บสถิติอย่างต่อเนื่องนำมาปรับปรุงวิธีการคาดการณ์ภัยพิบัติในระยะยาวให้มีความเที่ยงตรงมากขึ้นเรื่อยๆ แต่จะเน้นการเก็บสถิติข้อมูลจากนอกโลกเป็นหลักเนื่องจากมีข้อมูลมากกว่า
ซึ่งในช่วงคาดการณ์นี้อาจมีเหตุการณ์สำคัญเกิดขึ้นโดยเฉพาะเกี่ยวกับภัยพิบัติในเรื่องแผ่นดินไหว และสภาพอากาศที่แปรปรวน อาจมีเหตุการณ์เปลี่ยนแปลงทางการเมืองหรือเศรษฐกิจโลก ซึ่งต้องติดตามกันต่อไป

คาดว่าจะสังเกตเห็นได้ชัดเจนระหว่างวันที่ 16-22 สิงหาคม
วันที่ 16 สิงหาคม เวลา 12 UTC จะมีการเรียงตัวระหว่าง ดวงอาทืตย์ ดาววีนัส และ โลก ในแนว 180 องศา ซึ่งคาดว่าจะมีปฏิกริยาที่ดวงอาทิตย์มากเป็นพิเศษ และโลกมีความเสียงสูงต่อภัยพิบัติในวันเดียวกัน

วันที่ 17 สิงหาคม เวลา 1 UTC จะมีการเรียงตัวระหว่าง ดวงอาทืตย์ ดาววีนัส และ โลก ในแนว 0 องศา และมีการเรียงตัวระหว่าง ดวงอาทิตย์ ดาววีนัส และ ดาวพุธ ในเวลา 5 UTC

นอกจากนั้นแล้วยังมีการเรียงตัวกับดาวหาง Elenin ในแนว 90 องศาโดยที่ดาวหางนี้เข้าสู่วงโคจรดาวศุกร์ อาจมีผลกระทบต่อปฏิกริยาดวงอาทิตย์ ซึ่งอาจส่งผลกระทบต่อโลกในระหว่างวันนั้น และประมาณวันที่ 20-21 สิงหาคม


วันที่ 22 สิงหาคม เวลา 3 UTC จะมีการเรียงตัวระหว่างดวงอาทิตย์ โลก และ ดวงจันทร์ในแนว 90 องศา


สำหรับแนวเรียงตัวอื่นๆ ที่จะทำการเก็บสถิติในช่วงนี้ ได้แก่

เหตุการณ์ที่ดวงอาทิตย์

วันที่ 10 สิงหาคม เราเริ่มสังเกตุเห็นแนวปฏิกริยาสูงเคลื่อนตัวเข้ามาเรียงตัวโลก คาดว่าจะเกิดขึ้นในวันที่ 14-15 สิงหาคม โดยที่แนวสนามแม่เหล็กเปิดจะเข้ามาเรียงตัวกับโลกในวันที่ 17 สิงหาคม ส่งผลให้เกิดลมสุรืยะความเร็วสูงมาที่โลกในวันที่ 20-21 สิงหาคม


วันที่ 12 สิงหาคม พบแนวสนามแม่เหล็กเปิดขนาดปานกลาง-ใหญ่ จะส่งลมสุริยะความเร็วสูงมาที่โลกประมาณวันที่ 15 สิงหาคม

There could be space rocks on the ground waiting to be found. "On August 8 at 1:22 Eastern Daylight Time, all-sky cameras belonging to the Southern Ontario Meteor Network detected a fireball entering the atmosphere 54 miles above Lake Erie (80.944 W, 41.945 N), moving SSE at 25 km/s (55,900 mph). There is high confidence that this meteor produced meteorites." For one thing, the debris appears to have produced echoes from KCLE's doppler radar in Cleveland; note the circled reflections:

"The deep atmospheric penetration of this fireball combined with its deceleration and doppler radar echo strongly suggests a fall somewhere in the countryside east of Clevelend," continues Cooke. Pushpins in this Google map show some possible fall locations based on different assumptions about the meteorite's speed and mass. There could be debris anywhere in the countryside around the Ohio towns of Warren, Kinsman, and Hermitage. Readers who find a candidate meteorite are encouraged to contact the Meteoroid Environment Office for further instructions.​

[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]DELICATO: [/FONT]With two big sunspots turning toward Earth and a variety of prominences dancing around the solar limb, the sun is attracting the attention of amateur astronomers. Alan Friedman sends this report from Buffalo, New York: "The activity on the sun today was so diverse in intensity and character I was reminded of movements in a symphony. This very massive prominence (pictured below) was so very faint--almost invisible when others circling the limb were properly exposed. It's delicate tendrils inspired the name Delicato."

In Falmouth, Maine, photographer John Stetson turned his solar telescope toward sunspot group 1271 and found it seething. "The active region is bright and crackling, surrounded by long, twisting filaments of magnetism that seem poised to produce some powerful flares," he says. Indeed,NOAA analysts note that the sunspot has a "beta-delta-gamma" magnetic field that harbors energy for X-class explosions.

Late last night, two large earthquakes measuring 7.1 and 7.0 magnitude hit the Vanuatu Islands. The 7.1 hit at 16:55 UTC and 7.0 hit 1-1/2 hours later at 18:19 UTC. Tsunami warning was issued then lifted shortly after. No reports of damage at this time.​

Sunspot 1271 is so big, it's catching the attention of observers unaided by solar telescopes. Sarah E. Baur of Anaconda, Montana, noticed it yesterday through the smoke of a nearby fire:

​

"Our small town was inundated with smoke from surrounding forest fires," says Baur. "At 6:30 pm the sun appeared in and out through the thick smoke making a great photo op. I realized after viewing the shots on my monitor that sunspot 1271 is also visible."
