Officials on Tuesday launched an investigation into the mystery behind the second die-off of thousands of fish near Los Angeles in more than one month. Thousands of anchovies and sardines were found dead in Ventura Harbor near Los Angeles on Monday, alarming officials about any possible environmental hazard that might lead to the die-off. But a preliminary investigation found that the fish died due to lack of oxygen in the water after moving into the harbor a week ago, according to the Ventura Harbor Patrol (VHP). It remained unknown why the fish entered the harbor, but they could have been chased by a sea lion, dolphin or strong tide, VHP officials said. Pat Hummer of VHP said three patrol boats drove around scooping up dead fish before they started sinking and stinking. They filled up more than 20 50-gallon barrels throughout the day. The carcasses were dumped at sea. In early March, 175 tons or 2.5 million sardines died in Redondo Beach in King Harbor near Los Angeles. Scientists said poisoning from an acid generated by an offshore algae bloom might be a possible cause for the die-off, refuting claims by officials that the fishes were suffocated by lack of oxygen in the water.

เมื่อเวลา 19.00 น. วันที่ 11 เม.ย. นายสินทรัพย์ กิ่งวิชิต อายุ 18 ปี นักเรียนชั้น ม.6 โรงเรียนมัธยมวัดควนวิเศษมูลนิธิ อยู่บ้านเลขที่ 7 ม.3 บ้านควนมุด ต.บางหมาก อ.กันตัง จ.ตรัง ว่าบริเวณในสวนยางพาราและสวนปาล์มใกล้บ้านได้มีฝูงหิ่งห้อยจำนวนมาก เปล่งแสงระยิบระยับ มาเป็นคืนที่ 3 แล้ว ท่ามกลางความสนใจของชาวบ้านที่ทราบข่าว ต่างเหมารถยนต์กันมาดู จำนวนหลายร้อยคนในแต่ละคืน

ผู้สื่อข่าวจึงเดินทางไปตรวจสอบข้อเท็จ จริง พบชาวบ้านกว่า 100 คน กำลังใช้กล้องถ่ายรูปและโทรศัพท์มือถือถ่ายภาพฝูงหิ่งห้อยอยู่จริง คาดมีประมาณนับล้านตัวทั่วบริเวณพื้นที่สวนยางพาราประมาณ 10 ไร่ ขณะเปล่งแสงระยิบระยับเป็นจังหวะคล้ายไฟกระพริบอย่างสวยงาม ชาวบ้านที่มาพบเห็นเหตุการณ์ต่างฮือฮากับความแปลกประหลาดที่ปรากฏอยู่ตรง หน้า แต่ไม่สามารถบันทึกภาพความประทับใจได้ เนื่องจากแสงน้อย ซึ่งเมื่อใช้แฟลตก็ทำให้ไม่เห็นภาพไฟกระพริบได้ชัด

นางสมจิตร ใจศรี ชาวบ้าน ม.2 ต.บางหมาก กล่าวว่า สาเหตุที่มีหิ่งห้อยจำนวนมากมารวมตัวกันอาจเป็นช่วงฤดูผสมพันธุ์ หรืออาจหนีภัยน้ำท่วมมาจากที่อื่น ขณะที่ชาวบ้านบางคนเชื่อว่า เป็นปรากฏการณ์ธรรมชาติที่มักเกิดขึ้นหลังฝนตกหนัก หรือเป็นลางบอกเหตุบางอย่าง ซึ่งการพบหิ่งห้อยนับล้านตัว ทำให้มีชาวบ้านจากหลายตำบลแวะเวียนเข้าไปเยี่ยมชมอย่างไม่ขาดสาย แม้เส้นทางจะเปลี่ยว และมืดมากก็ตาม เนื่องจากส่วนใหญ่ไม่เคยพบเห็นหิ่งห้อยจำนวนมากขนาดนี้มาก่อน และไม่เคยพบเห็นมาก่อน ซึ่งฝูงหิ่งห้อยจำนวนดังกล่าวมักจะปรากฏขึ้นในช่วงค่ำถึงเวลาประมาณ 24.00 น.และค่อยๆ หมดไป

Local woman Lisa Perry took several photographs of the dead fish, including some 18cm whiting. The majority she found on her 2km walk past the surf club at 4pm were pilchards. "There were thousands of them," Ms Perry said. "When people saw me start taking photographs they came up and asked me if I knew what they were and what had happened." Ms Perry said the incident was similar to one in March 2006 when by-catch from commercial trawlers left a trail of dead fish from Coolum Beach to Buddina. On that occasion the EPA launched an investigation. "It was terrible. The beach then was thick with fish, but this time there wasn’t as many," she said. "Someone mentioned to me yesterday that they had seen a trawler quite close in the morning and that is what they do when they are trawling for prawns, but I don’t know." Queensland Seafood Industry Association spokesman Paul Higginbottom said he was unaware of the latest incident but said it would be unusual for trawlers to be in the Marcoola area. A DERM spokesman was also unaware of the incident and said no investigation had been launched. A Marcoola Surf Lifesaving Club spokesman said he was not aware of the incident but another Marcoola resident said children on the beach were trying to perform miracles on the dead fish. "A lot of them were getting buckets of water and putting the fish in them hoping to bring them back to life," she said. "I’ve never seen anything like it, they weren’t sickly or anything."

"A few hundred" dead fish were found along a one-mile stretch of Watsonville Slough, including catfish, carp and sunfish, Department of Fish and Game spokesman Kyle Orr said. The fish died in the aftermath of last week's four-alarm fire that ripped through a cold storage warehouse on West Beach Street. The 78,000-square-foot building first burst into flames at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. Teams of 50 firefighters worked in shifts to battle the inferno around the clock. Firefighters extinguished the blaze Friday afternoon. The cause is still under investigation. During the three-day fire, two fire ladder hoses were raised high above the roof and firefighters shot powerful streams of water at 700 gallons per minute. "There was so much water being used to fight the fire, there was no way to stop it from getting into the slough," Orr said.

All of that water swept up and carried debris with it as it gushed into Watsonville Slough. Organic materials, such as apples, soot and ash, spilled into the slough and used up oxygen in the water, Watsonville Public Works and Utilities Director David Koch said. By using up the water's oxygen, fish were left to suffocate to death. Koch agreed there was nothing the firefighters could have done to protect the slough. Watsonville Slough's health, however, appears to be rebounding quickly. "Things looked better today, oxygen levels already started to come back. The (environmental) impact will not continue for very long," Koch said. No other animals died because of the fire, he said. Humans living near the site of the fire were also feeling better as air quality improved to near-normal pollution levels Monday, public works officials said.

A resident of Char Bestin under Charmontaj union, said, "More than 200 buffaloes and cows died in the union and more than 500 others were infected with the disease. We brought it to the notice of the doctor posted at the Galachipa Livestock Department office, but they did not visit the areas till Saturday," he alleged. The worst affected areas are Char Bestin, Majher Char, Char Mandol, and Char Rustam of the union. Every day the disease is spreading to different other areas in the union, sources said. Describing the symptoms of the disease, another resident of Char Bestin said, "When one animal fell ill with the disease, at first it could not walk, the temperature ran high and in 5 to 6 hours it died." Judging from the symptoms, the doctor at the Galachipa Livestock Department office confirmed it as tarka disease. He also advised him to bring his sick animals to the upazila livestock office for treatment, the farmer said. A farmer of Majher Char said, "I had 52 buffaloes and about 100 cows. Of them, 14 buffaloes and 6 cows fell ill with the disease 8 days ago and 3 of the buffaloes died Saturday morning 30 Apr 2011.

I went to the upazila livestock office 6 days ago and informed them of the disease. When the doctor at the livestock office learnt about the symptoms, he told me to bring the sick animals to his office. The doctor has no idea about the inaccessible remote Char areas of the upazila. I even offered to pay for his travel to the char area, but he did not agree," the man alleged. When contacted, Dr Humayun Kabir, officer of the upazila livestock office, said, "We have sufficient medicines in our stock and I told the farmers to bring their sick animals to my office. But they informed me that they were not in a position to bring the animals to the livestock office." When asked why he did not go to the remote areas to treat the sick animals, he said, "I have to take permission from the higher authorities before leaving my office." Laskar Tajul Islam, UNO Upazila Nirbahi Officer/chief executive of Galachipa upazila, said, "I told him to go to the Char areas and treat the animals. Even I warned him against failure to comply with the decision. He later assured me that he would go there."

DNR Fisheries Biologist, Tom Meronek says, it appears that a virus is responsible for killing off large amounts of 3 year old Black Crappie in the bodies of water. Meronek says, there is always viral activity in the water and when conditions are right and fish are under high stress, a virus can spread. He says it's unusual that it only seems to be affecting 3 year old Crappie. "From the numbers that I've had people call in about and what I've seen myself, I'm a little concerned about the one year class that's affected. It could set the population back", said Meronek. You can't see the virus itself, but you can see the secondary effects on the fish. The diseased Crappie have been observed with popped out eyes and black fungus on the fin. With bodies of water the size of Lake Dubay and the Stevens Point Flowage, there isn't much the DNR can do about the virus. They have to let it runs it's course and determine the effects afterward. Samples of the fish have been sent to fish health labs to try and pinpoint exactly why the virus set in. The results are expected in a few weeks. The first reports of the dying fish came in on April 25th.

The crocodile was spotted by Department of Environment and Conservation workers earlier this week near wharf one in the port authority area of the Port Hedland harbour. They have been tracking its movements since. DEC wildlife officer Ann Biasol said people needed to be alert. "Saltwater crocodiles live in coastal rivers and swamps and often occur in the open sea and around islands. They also extend well inland along major rivers, floodplain billabongs and into freshwater rivers, creeks and swamps," she said. "People are advised to take care in estuarine environments especially near the edge and if the water is discoloured. "They should ensure their activities are not an invitation to crocodiles, such as cleaning fish near the water's edge and entering the water when launching and retrieving boats." The DEC is attempting to catch the three-metre croc. Sightings of saltwater crocodiles in the Pilbara should be reported to DEC on 9182 2000.

BFAR Director Asis Perez meanwhile expressed optimism that the reduction of fish mortality in Taal Lake would continue as a result of interventions undertaken by local government units, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Task Force Taal Lake.


On Wednesday, BFAR technical teams recorded low dissolved oxygen levels in Laurel, Agoncillo and San Nicolas ranging from 0.96 to 2.85 parts per million. The ideal level is 6.0 parts per million for the growing of bangus.
