The lions were suffering from glanders, which is most commonly found in horses, donkeys, mules as well as other domesticated animals. It can spread from infected animals to humans. Veterinarian Houman Moloukpour told the newspaper that mismanagement at the zoo most likely contributed to the lions getting sick. The paper did not say when the lions were killed. Glanders is rare in the Western world, but is still endemic in parts of Africa, Asia, the Middle East and South America.

Situation:

Up to 200 cows have mysteriously been found dead in Wisconsin in the latest mass animal death. Dozens of birds were found dead in Romania last week, 300 grackles dropped from the sky in Alabama and thousands of fish have been discovered dead in Maryland. However, vets believe the cows were wiped out by an infectious disease - although the exact cause remains unknown and samples were being sent to laboratories for testing. The owner of the cattle found his animals dead in Stockton, Wisconsin, and immediately alerted police. It was thought they may have had a respiratory condition known as red nose - infectious bovine rhinotracheitis - or Bovine Virus Diarrhea. Police said there is no risk of any illness spreading to other animals or humans after the farmer made the grim discovery on Friday. Conspiracy theorists are likely to seize on the latest mass animal deaths which have been reported round the world since New Year's Eve. It has been suggested that government experiments are to blame - or the apocalypse is imminent. However, scientists insist all the incidents have rational explanations. Unexplained deaths have been reported in Sweden, the U.S., Great Britain and New Zealand. IBR - or infectious bovine rhinotracheitis - which the animals are thought to have had is a contagious virus that usually occurs in the animal's windpipe. It will spread quickly to cattle of all ages if they have not been vaccinated.

Recent heavy rains have filled the normally shallow freshwater lake at Moolap, dumping dead animals from other nearby waterways into it and sucking away the water's oxygen. Thousands of dead creatures are now floating on the lake's surface after having drowned or suffocated in the water, which has turned black. Geelong Field and Game member Ray Agg discovered the grisly scene yesterday morning while monitoring his group's bird conservation work at the lake. "We've got a lot of bird nesting boxes set up at Reedy Lake, and a lot of those went underwater with the floods, so lots of eggs and young duck and ibis chicks have been lost," Mr Agg said. "There are thousands of dead fish and eels all over the place too." "It's amazing, I've been here since the '70s and I've not seen this before, it's really a shame." A Department of Primary Industries spokesman said the natural phenomenon was known as a "blackwater event", which occurs when sudden heavy rains sweep plant and other material into a waterway and then leach oxygen from the water as the matter breaks down. This turns the water black, and fish and other aquatic life die from the resultant lack of oxygen. Ducks, ibis, eels, mullets, bream and European carp - some as heavy as 10kg - were among the dead animals found yesterday. Mr Agg said it was ironic that the recent downpour of rain could harm, rather than help, some aquatic life. "Floods can bring a lot of water and create new habitats by filling up lakes, but on the other hand, floods also bring a lot of misery," he said. According to information on the DPI website, the water's temperature and the amount of present leafy litter and woody debris are two most important factors in blackwater's spread and containment. Reedy Lake is part of the Lake Connewarre State Game Reserve, which is managed by Parks Victoria. Parks Victoria ranger Stuart Willsher did not wish to comment on the blackwater yesterday afternoon. The EPA has also received reports of many dead fish being found in parts of the Barwon River, with the influx of fast-flowing freshwater killing saltwater fish, a spokesman said.

Yankton Animal Control Officer Lisa Brasel said DRC 1339, a bird poison used by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, was the likely cause of death for more than 300 starlings found in the downtown area. Brasel said a USDA official contacted her after seeing new reports about the dead birds. In an interview with the Press & Dakotan newspaper, wildlife biologist Ricky Woods confirmed that the poison was used by the USDA at a feedlot about 10 miles south of Yankton. He said birds usually die before getting so far from the poison.

Situation: Reports have been coming for neartly a month of unusual numbers of seals, both dead and alive, turning up along Labrador’s north and south coast. These seals were spotted close to shore in Cartwright. There, residents have seen a mixture of seals, dead and alive, come close to shore. Conservation officers have explained the unusual appearance of dead seals as being as result of early births. Seal pups were born as much as three months early as a result of unusually warm weather for the time of year. Warm weather and open waters have also enabled some live seals to get closer to shore.

Cold front brings misery to north, central regions

</td></tr></tbody></table> HA NOI — The prolonged and damaging cold spell has attacked the northern and central regions, deeply disrupting the daily life of the local people.



As many as seven deaths were reported due to cold weather or carbon monoxide poisoning from coal braziers in the central provinces of Quang Nam, Quang Tri and Phu Yen.


The incidence of cold-related diseases rose 15 per cent nation-wide, said Luong Ngoc Khue, director of the Ministry of Health's Health Examination and Treatment Department.
"Almost all of the patients are children or the elderly hospitalised with symptoms of respiratory disease," Khue said.


Health experts have advised people of the risks of carbon monoxide exposure and have also warned parents not carry their children by motorbike in the cold weather. Statistics from the Livestock Breeding Department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development show that the prolonged cold weather has killed over 17,000 cows and buffaloes mainly in the northern provinces of Son La, Lao Cai, Lai Chau and Cao Bang.


In addition, peach and kumquat trees are unlikely to be able to bloom during Tet due to the freezing temperatures.
Fishermen missing


Prolonged icy weather, together with rough seas and gusting winds, has prevented hundreds of offshore fishing vessels from returning to the mainland.


Nguyen Van Huynh, a representative from Quang Ngai Province's Border Guard, said that more than 100 fishing vessels from Binh Son District and Ly Son Island District were forced to shelter at islands offshore.


Pham Nhanh, a fishing vessel captain from Binh Son District's Binh Chau Commune, said that his boat had managed to make it home, but that many others, laden with between seven and 15 tonnes of fish, were waiting for better weather near Hoang Sa and Truong Sa islands.


Nhanh said it took at least six days for fishing boats to go from Truong Sa Islands and five days from Hoang Sa Islands to local ports.


About 380 fishing vessels in Quang Nam Province's Tam Quang Commune and hundreds of others in Da Nang faced the same situation.


Head of the Tho Quang Port's Fishing Vessel Management Board Huynh Van Phuong said about 200-300 fishing boats either sheltered or anchored at the city's port, while about ten boats went offshore each day.


The bitter cold spell is forecast to affect the central region today, bringing heavy rain, rough seas and gusting winds of between 61 and 102kph.


Last week, a fishing boat from Thanh Hoa Province carrying nine fishermen and another from Hai Phong carrying five fishermen went missing.


Rescue units are still searching for the boats and fishermen. — VNS

Observers are reporting ground currents and intensifying Northern Lights in Scandinavia.

Instruments on NASA's Cassini spacecraft are picking up strong bursts of radio static. Apparently, lightning is being generated in multiple cells across the storm front. Cassini's cameras are also beaming back fantastic images of the tempest.

Six months later (Dec. 23, 2010) he extracted the paper and beheld the result:​

"This is called solargraphy," explains Koeman. "Every day the sun makes a track across the photographic paper--high in the summer and low in the winter. Daily tracks are interrupted by clouds and, occasionally, absent altogether because of rainy days." It's a low-tech but beautiful way to record the seasons; browse the links below for more examples.

Fourteen of the whales were already dead when the group was found scattered over 150 metres of rocks, mud and mangrove early Friday in Parengarenga Harbour, 15 kilometres south of North Cape. They appeared to have become stranded the previous day. The department said the others had to be put down because they were in poor condition and chances of successfully refloating them in deteriorating weather were remote. "If we felt there was a real chance we could have successfully rescued them, we would have," the department's area manager Jonathan Maxwell was quoted as saying by the New Zealand Press Association. "Sadly, the current conditions were against these animals," Maxwell said. "The kindest thing was to end their suffering."
